Ice hockey is one of the flagship disciplines of the Winter Olympics. First introduced as a demonstration tournament at the Summer Games in Antwerp 1920, the men’s competition became a permanent fixture of the Winter Olympic programme from Chamonix 1924. The women’s event was added in 1992, making its official debut at Nagano 1998.
Italy first took part in Olympic ice hockey at Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, with the men's team achieving its best result - seventh place - on home ice in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1956. The Italian women made their Olympic debut at the Turin 2006 Olympics, finishing in eighth place.
A fast-paced, high-intensity sport, ice hockey will take centre stage once again at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Matches will be held at the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena and the Ice Park in Milan.
