Figure skating is the oldest sport on the Winter Olympic programme, having first featured at the Summer Games in London 1908 and again in Antwerp 1920. Until the 1972 Games in Sapporo, the competition included men’s singles, women’s singles, and pair skating. Ice dance was added at Innsbruck 1976, followed by the introduction of the mixed team event at Sochi 2014.
Italy has won two Olympic medals in figure skating, a discipline set to grace the Milano Ice Skating Arena during the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. The country’s first podium finish came at Salt Lake City 2002, when Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio claimed bronze in ice dance. Twelve years later, at Sochi 2014, Carolina Kostner delivered a stunning performance in the women’s singles to secure another bronze for Italy.
