Snowboarding is one of the youngest disciplines in the Olympic programme. It made its debut at Nagano 1998 with giant slalom (later converted into parallel giant slalom at Salt Lake City 2002) and halfpipe. Snowboard cross joined the schedule at Turin 2006, with its mixed team version introduced at Beijing 2022, while slopestyle and big air were added at Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018 respectively.
The Livigno Snow Park, located in the Valtellina resort of Livigno, will host all 11 snowboarding events at Milano Cortina 2026.
Italy’s greatest triumphs in the sport are closely tied to Michela Moioli, who captured a historic individual gold at PyeongChang 2018, followed by a silver in the mixed team event with Omar Visintin at Beijing 2022. Visintin also earned bronze in the men’s snowboard cross at those same Games.
Italy’s first Olympic snowboard medal, however, came from Thomas Prugger, who took silver in the giant slalom at Nagano 1998. Notable too is Lidia Trettel’s bronze at Salt Lake City 2002, the first edition to feature the modern parallel giant slalom format.
